Scenes from the Open Fields

All summer he draws and paints plein air.
He knows the ephemeral fields hold nothing
for posterity, no stone or iron works to endure.
So he honors time with fleeting images. Bent
among furrows, he delves into the wild edges.
From his distance he sketches our silhouettes:
the relative angles of bodies, all our dramatic
gestures. He sees birds veer over our heads,
deer flee at our approach. But he can’t call out.
There are brambles. His private field is dense,
impenetrable, open only to sky. There are
constant blossoms. Silence thrives like bees.
